Compassionate psychotherapy for meaningful life change.

About Dr. Jesse Wingate

I value the dignity and worth of each client that I work with and approach treatment with an ethic of openness, kindness, and respect. These values have informed my treatment style and stem from my various educational and life experiences.

Theoretically, I employ treatment techniques deriving from Interpersonal Process Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Multicultural and Feminist Theory, Existential Therapy, Mindfulness, Psychodynamic Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.

Former clients have described my style as empathic, warm, “real,” and compassionate. I also incorporate humor, when appropriate. If interested in working with me, please feel free to schedule a brief 15-minute free consult to determine if we’d be a good fit.

My approach to therapy

“Painful as it may be, a significant emotional event can be the catalyst for choosing a direction that serves us - and those around us - more effectively. Look for the learning.”

— Louisa May Alcott

  • I have diverse clinical training and professional experience including specialized leadership and clinical experience in primary care / health service psychology. I formerly served as Director of Behavioral Health overseeing the development of Primary Care Behavioral Health (PCBH), Outpatient Therapy, and Psychiatry services at a rural Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). I completed an American Psychological Association (APA)-Accredited Internship in Clinical Health Psychology with Cherokee Health Systems, Inc. in Knoxville, TN in 2020 where I gained specialty experience in the treatment of serious mental illness and substance use disorders in rural and urban environments. My training background also includes clinical experience within a residential treatment facility for substance and gambling use disorders, hospital consultation experience in rehabilitation psychology, practice within community mental health centers, and outpatient therapy in college / university counseling centers. I am a career changer and spent several years as a higher education administrator in various roles including Assistant Director of the Career Service departments at the University of Richmond and Dartmouth College.
